Support Sloth Bear Conservation with Wildlife SOS

The Indian Sloth Bear (Melursus Ursinus) is an iconic yet vulnerable species, easily recognized by its shaggy black coat, distinctive long muzzle, and unique V-shaped white patch on its chest. These fascinating creatures use their long, curved claws to dig out termites and ants, their primary food source. Sloth bears are generally solitary and nocturnal, growing up to 6 feet in length. Males can weigh up to 310 pounds, while females reach 210 pounds.

Despite their strength and resilience, sloth bears face significant threats. They are classified as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List due to:

  • Habitat loss caused by deforestation and human encroachment
  • Poaching for body parts
  • Exploitation in performances or captivity
  • Conflict with humans due to aggressive behavior and crop destruction

Wildlife SOS is committed to rescuing and rehabilitating these bears, offering them safe shelter, medical care, and a second chance at life.
